French Connectors for TCF Canada Writing
French connectors help a reader follow the relationship between your ideas. In TCF Canada writing, the best connector is not the longest or most formal expression: it is the one that accurately shows comparison, opposition, cause, consequence, addition, concession or conclusion.
Quick answer
Which French connectors should you learn for TCF Canada writing?
Build a small connector bank organized by function. For Task 3, use source-attribution phrases to present the documents, one accurate contrast to compare them, a clear opinion marker for Part 2, and cause, consequence or example connectors to develop your argument. Use each expression only when its grammar and logical meaning fit the sentence. What is a French connector?
A connector is a word or expression that tells the reader how one idea relates to another. Car introduces a reason. Par conséquent announces a result. Toutefois signals a contrast or limitation. The connector does not create logic by itself; it makes logic that is already present easier to recognize.
This distinction matters in the TCF Canada written-expression test. A paragraph filled with advanced expressions can remain confusing when the relationships are inaccurate. A simpler paragraph using car, mais and ainsi correctly can be more coherent and persuasive.
Learn connectors by function, grammar and register—not as one alphabetical list. Before inserting an expression, finish this sentence in your mind: ‘I am using it because the next idea is a cause, a result, a contrast…’ If you cannot name the relationship, you probably do not need the connector.
Comparing two viewpoints: d’un côté, d’autre part and related structures
Comparison is central to TCF Canada Writing Task 3 because Part 1 must present two document viewpoints. Use a paired structure when you want the organization to be immediately visible. Use a subordinating expression such as tandis que or alors que when the contrast fits naturally inside one sentence.
D’un côté… de l’autre is a natural way to show two sides. D’une part… d’autre part is slightly more formal and particularly useful in an exam response. Keep each pair complete: beginning with d’une part and never providing d’autre part leaves the structure unfinished.
- d’un côté… de l’autre — two sides of the same issue
- d’une part… d’autre part — a more formal paired comparison
- tandis que / alors que + indicative — simultaneous contrast between clauses
- contrairement à + noun or stressed pronoun — direct difference from another position
- en revanche — a contrasting point that balances what came before
D’un côté, le télétravail réduit les déplacements. De l’autre, il peut limiter les échanges spontanés entre collègues.D’une part, cette mesure offre davantage de flexibilité; d’autre part, elle exige une organisation rigoureuse.Le premier document insiste sur les économies réalisées, tandis que le second met l’accent sur les conséquences sociales.Pour certains employés, cette liberté améliore le quotidien; pour d’autres, elle rend les limites du travail moins claires.Attributing and reformulating the source documents
Task 3 requires more than placing two opinions beside each other. The reader should understand which idea comes from which document. Attribution phrases let you preserve that distinction while reformulating the source meaning in your own French.
Varying the reporting structure can prevent repetition, but accuracy is more important than variation. Selon le premier document is neutral. L’auteur affirme que sounds stronger and should be used only when the source really makes a firm claim. Le texte laisse entendre que is useful for an implied position, but it should not replace clear evidence.
- selon le premier / le second document
- l’auteur estime, considère ou souligne que
- le texte présente, évoque ou met en évidence
- les deux documents s’accordent sur… mais diffèrent quant à…
Selon le premier document, cette organisation permettrait aux salariés de mieux gérer leur temps.Le second texte met plutôt l’accent sur le risque d’isolement.Si le premier auteur valorise la flexibilité, le second souligne la nécessité de préserver les échanges directs.Concession: certes… mais, même si and bien que
Concession recognizes a valid point before introducing a limit, complication or different conclusion. It is valuable in argumentative writing because it shows that your position is considered rather than absolute.
The three most useful patterns do not use the same grammar. Certes… mais connects two statements. Même si is followed by the indicative. Bien que is followed by the subjunctive. Choose the pattern you can control; a correct même si sentence is better than an incorrect attempt with the subjunctive.
Introducing a clear personal opinion
In Task 3, the transition from objective synthesis to personal argument must be visible. An opinion marker helps the reader recognize the beginning of Part 2. It should lead directly to a position, not to another vague description of the debate.
Pour ma part, selon moi and à mon avis are all appropriate. Do not use several together. À mon avis, personnellement, je pense que repeats the same function three times and wastes words. Select one expression and spend the saved space developing the reason.
Pour ma part, je suis favorable à un système hybride, à condition qu’il reste volontaire.À mon avis, cette mesure serait utile dans les grandes villes, mais moins adaptée aux régions rurales.Selon moi, il existe des avantages et des inconvénients. This does not reveal which solution or position the writer supports.
Explaining cause: car, parce que, puisque, grâce à and en raison de
A position becomes an argument when you explain why it is reasonable. Car and parce que introduce a clause with a subject and verb. Puisque normally presents a reason treated as already known or evident. Grâce à introduces a favourable cause, while en raison de is neutral or often negative and is followed by a noun group.
Avoid using grâce à for a harmful outcome. If delays caused a cancellation, en raison des retards or à cause des retards is logical; grâce aux retards would imply that the delays produced a welcome benefit.
Cette solution mérite d’être développée, car elle réduit les déplacements inutiles.Puisque les besoins varient selon les employés, une règle unique serait difficile à appliquer.Grâce à un horaire flexible, certains parents peuvent mieux organiser leur journée.En raison du manque de personnel, le service ferme plus tôt.Showing consequence: ainsi, donc, de ce fait and par conséquent
A consequence must result from the previous idea. Ainsi is concise and versatile. Donc is natural but slightly less formal. De ce fait and par conséquent suit a more formal written register. No expression should be inserted merely to make the sentence sound advanced.
Check the direction of the logic. If the first sentence says that public transport is unreliable, a logical consequence could be that residents use cars more often. It would not automatically prove that ticket prices should increase.
Les horaires sont plus flexibles. Ainsi, les employés peuvent mieux répartir leurs tâches.Le nombre de passagers a augmenté; par conséquent, la ville devra renforcer le service.Comme les loyers sont élevés, de nombreux travailleurs vivent loin du centre; de ce fait, leurs trajets sont plus longs.Adding and developing ideas
Addition connectors should extend the argument rather than begin a disconnected list. De plus adds a supporting point. En outre is more formal. Par ailleurs can introduce a related consideration or a shift within the same discussion. Également normally appears inside the sentence rather than at the beginning of every paragraph.
Non seulement… mais aussi creates emphasis, but its two elements should have parallel grammatical forms. If non seulement is followed by an infinitive, mais aussi should normally introduce another infinitive.
Cette mesure réduirait la circulation. De plus, elle améliorerait la qualité de l’air.Le télétravail permet non seulement de gagner du temps, mais aussi de réduire certaines dépenses.Par ailleurs, les entreprises doivent prévoir des outils de communication adaptés.Introducing an example or clarification
An example turns an abstract argument into a situation the reader can picture. Par exemple is sufficient in most cases. Prenons le cas de and imaginons que are useful when you deliberately create a hypothetical scenario. En d’autres termes clarifies an idea; it does not introduce new evidence.
A numerical illustration can strengthen reasoning when it is transparent. Do not invent a statistic and present it as established research. Frame it as a possible case: imaginons qu’un salarié économise trente minutes par jour. The language signals that the number is an illustration.
Par exemple, un parent pourrait commencer plus tôt afin d’aller chercher son enfant à l’école.Imaginons qu’un salarié évite trente minutes de trajet par jour: il récupérerait environ deux heures et demie par semaine.En d’autres termes, cette politique devrait offrir un choix plutôt qu’imposer une seule organisation.Concluding without repeating the entire answer
A short TCF response does not need a long formal conclusion. One sentence can restate the practical position, recommendation or condition. En somme and en définitive work well when they genuinely summarize what the argument established.
Do not add a new major reason in the last sentence. If the conclusion suddenly introduces cost, environmental impact or public health for the first time, the idea has no room for explanation and weakens the paragraph’s unity.
En somme, cette solution devrait être encouragée, à condition qu’elle reste adaptée aux besoins de chaque équipe.Pour toutes ces raisons, les municipalités devraient d’abord améliorer le service avant d’augmenter les tarifs.En définitive, un modèle flexible me paraît plus réaliste qu’une règle identique pour tous.Choose connectors that fit the register
TCF writing tasks name a reader and a purpose. The connector should fit that relationship. A message to a friend can use mais, donc and en plus naturally. An article, formal request or professional message can use toutefois, par conséquent and en outre when the surrounding language is equally appropriate.
Formal does not mean old-fashioned or unnecessarily heavy. Expressions such as force est de constater que consume words and can sound memorized. Prefer precise language that you would be able to explain and reuse correctly in another topic.
- Neutral and versatile: mais, car, ainsi, de plus, par exemple, en somme.
- More formal: toutefois, néanmoins, en outre, par conséquent, en définitive.
- Conversational: en plus, du coup. Use these carefully in informal tasks and generally avoid du coup in a formal Task 3 response.
A reusable Task 3 connector pattern
The following sequence is a planning framework, not a paragraph to memorize. Replace every bracketed decision with information from the actual documents and your own argument. You may omit any connector that the logic does not require.
Les deux documents abordent [thème]. Selon le premier texte, [idée reformulée]. Le second met plutôt l’accent sur [idée reformulée].Pour ma part, je considère que [position], car [raison]. Certes, [limite], mais [réponse ou condition].Par exemple, [illustration]. Ainsi, [conséquence]. En somme, [position finale ou recommandation].Before-and-after paragraph: fewer connectors, clearer logic
Weak writing often treats connectors as decorations. The first paragraph below contains several signals, but their functions are repetitive or unclear. The revision uses fewer expressions and makes every relationship visible.
De nos jours, le télétravail est important. Premièrement, il est flexible. Deuxièmement, il peut isoler. En outre, je suis pour. Cependant, il faut des règles. Par conséquent, c’est une bonne solution. The ideas are listed, the contrast is underdeveloped and the final consequence does not follow precisely.
Le télétravail offre davantage de flexibilité, mais il peut aussi isoler certains employés. Pour ma part, je suis favorable à un modèle hybride, car il maintient des contacts réguliers. Ainsi, les salariés profiteraient d’une plus grande autonomie sans perdre tout lien avec leur équipe. Each connector now has one clear job: contrast, reason and consequence.
Common connector mistakes in TCF writing
Review connector errors by category. A vocabulary correction is not enough when the real problem is grammar or logic. Explain why the relationship fails, then rewrite the sentence using the simplest accurate alternative.
- Stacking synonyms: toutefois, néanmoins and cependant together do not create a stronger contrast.
- Wrong grammar: bien que requires the subjunctive; même si takes the indicative.
- Incomplete pairs: use d’une part with d’autre part, and non seulement with mais aussi.
- False consequence: par conséquent must introduce a result supported by the preceding idea.
- Repetitive opinion markers: use one of selon moi, à mon avis or pour ma part—not all three.
- Register mismatch: avoid conversational fillers in a formal article or professional letter.
- Connector at every sentence: allow a clear subject or pronoun to maintain continuity when no new logical signal is needed.
Mini-practice: choose the relationship before the expression
Complete each sentence mentally before checking the suggested answer. More than one connector may be grammatically possible, but the proposed choice makes the intended relationship explicit.
Le premier auteur insiste sur le prix, tandis que le second s’intéresse surtout à la qualité du service.Cette mesure serait utile, car elle faciliterait les déplacements des personnes âgées.Bien que le projet soit coûteux, il pourrait produire des économies à long terme.Les autobus passent rarement; de ce fait, de nombreux habitants utilisent leur voiture.Par exemple, un horaire prolongé permettrait aux travailleurs de rentrer plus facilement le soir.Build a personal connector bank
Do not try to memorize every expression on this page. Select one or two reliable connectors for each function and write a correct sentence about several unrelated topics. When those expressions become automatic, add a more formal or grammatically demanding alternative.
During review, underline each connector and write its function above it: comparison, concession, opinion, cause, result, addition, example or conclusion. If two neighbouring expressions perform the same function, remove one. If the relationship is mislabeled, revise the logic before changing the vocabulary.

Can I begin every paragraph with a connector?
You can begin a paragraph with an appropriate connector, but you should not force one into every sentence. Use a connector only when the reader needs a logical relationship to be signalled.
How many connectors should I use in Task 3?
There is no official target number. A short response normally needs only enough connectors to show the two viewpoints, your position and the relationships inside your argument. Every connector should perform a distinct job.

A B2 response benefits from precise comparison, concession and logical development, but rare expressions are not required. Controlled structures such as certes… mais, tandis que and ainsi can support strong writing when used accurately.
What is the difference between grâce à and en raison de?
Grâce à normally introduces a favourable cause. En raison de is neutral or often used for an unfavourable cause. Both are followed by a noun group rather than a complete finite clause.
