TCF Canada writing: task completion before decoration

Good grammar cannot rescue a response that answers the wrong purpose. Before writing, identify the audience, the requested action, every required content point and the appropriate register.

What task completion means

Task completion means that the response performs the requested communication. If a prompt asks you to describe an experience and advise a friend, both actions must be present. A polished description without advice is incomplete.

  • Identify the recipient and relationship.
  • Circle every requested action.
  • Choose formal or informal language.
  • Check that the conclusion matches the purpose.

A three-minute planning routine

Write a one-line purpose statement, list two or three content points and decide how the paragraphs will move from one idea to the next. This short plan reduces repetition and makes the final review more effective.

  • Purpose: What should the reader understand or do?
  • Content: Which details are mandatory?
  • Structure: What belongs in each paragraph?
  • Language: Which tense and register fit?

Review in the right order

Check completion before grammar. Then check organization, verb forms, agreement, connectors and spelling. This order prevents a candidate from spending valuable time polishing a sentence while a required part of the task is still missing.

How to practise the three TCF Canada writing tasks

TCF Canada writing practice should train decisions before sentences. Read the prompt once for the situation and a second time for obligations. Note who is writing, who receives the text, why the message is being sent and which content points must appear. Only then choose a structure and begin drafting.

Across the three tasks, the communicative demand becomes more complex. Learners need to manage practical messages, organized narration or description, and developed comparison or argumentation. Model answers are useful when they reveal structure and language choices, but copying a fixed response can produce an irrelevant answer when the audience or purpose changes.

  • Opening: make the situation and relationship clear.
  • Development: complete each requested action with relevant detail.
  • Connection: show how examples support the purpose.
  • Closing: end in a way that fits the reader and desired outcome.

What useful TCF writing correction should show

A useful correction separates task completion from grammar accuracy. Task-completion feedback checks relevance, audience, register and required content. Language feedback checks verb forms, agreement, sentence structure, vocabulary precision and cohesion. Combining everything into one vague score makes improvement difficult.

After reviewing a corrected version, rewrite the response instead of only reading the comments. Preserve the original message, repair the missing obligations and reuse two or three corrected structures. This turns TCF writing feedback into active learning and makes future improvement more likely.
