Quick answer

What should you know about TCF Canada Speaking Task 1: interview format and practice?

Prepare flexible idea banks for identity, daily life, work or study, interests, experience and plans. Answer the exact question, add one concrete detail and stop naturally so the interaction can continue.

Build reusable idea banks

List facts and short stories you can adapt across common personal themes. For work or study, prepare what you do, why you chose it, one challenge and one future goal. For interests, prepare frequency, motivation and a recent example.

The goal is not to predict questions. It is to make familiar information easy to retrieve in French.

Use answer, detail and extension

Start with a direct response. Add a reason, example, contrast or time reference. If the question invites more, extend once; if it is narrow, finish without forcing a speech.

Original practice answer
Je travaille dans la logistique depuis trois ans. J'aime surtout résoudre les problèmes urgents, parce que chaque journée est différente. À long terme, j'aimerais former les nouveaux employés.

The answer gives a fact, a reason and a future extension without sounding memorized.

Practise follow-up flexibility

Record a first answer, then ask yourself an unpredictable follow-up such as 'Pourquoi?', 'Depuis quand?' or 'Pouvez-vous donner un exemple?'. Respond without restarting the first answer. This trains interaction and grammatical recovery.

  • Keep notes to keywords only.
  • Vary tense when the meaning requires it.
  • Correct briefly and continue.
  • Avoid memorized biographies.

Review one feature at a time

On the first replay, check relevance and development. On the second, check pauses and sentence control. On the third, note one recurring language issue. Record a fresh question so improvement transfers beyond one script.
