TCF Canada results, validity and retake rules

TCF Canada results report each language ability separately. For Canadian immigration, the result must also remain valid when the application rules require it. Use the official testing body and IRCC as the sources of truth for delivery, validity and equivalency.

Quick answer

What should you know about TCF Canada results, validity and retake rules?

For Express Entry, IRCC says language-test results must be less than two years old when you complete your profile and submit your permanent-residence application. Confirm the certificate process and any retake conditions with the official test body and centre.

Read the result component by component

Listening, reading, speaking and writing can map to different NCLC levels. Do not average the four values when a program requires a minimum in every ability. Enter the result exactly as the application system requests and use the current IRCC table.

A Maple practice estimate is learning feedback. It is not an official result and should never be entered in an immigration application.

  • Check the candidate details on the certificate.
  • Keep every component separate.
  • Use current official equivalency ranges.
  • Record the certificate date before planning an application.

Plan validity around the application date

IRCC states that Express Entry results must be less than two years old both when the profile is completed and when the permanent-residence application is submitted. A result close to expiry can therefore affect planning even if it was valid when preparation began.

Requirements outside Express Entry may differ. Read the instructions for the exact program rather than assuming one validity rule covers every use.

Use a retake as a new preparation cycle

Before booking another session, compare the four official component results and identify the smallest meaningful gap. Review practice history to separate language weaknesses from pacing or task-completion problems. Then choose new material instead of memorizing an earlier attempt.

  • One weak comprehension skill: review error categories and evidence.
  • One weak productive skill: review task completion and organization.
  • Several weak skills: return to level-based French learning.
