Meaning belongs to the sentence
Consider: « La réunion a été avancée à 9 h 30. » Here, avancée means moved to an earlier time. It does not mean that the meeting made progress. The sentence and the scheduling context select the meaning.
- Evidence: the new time is earlier.
- Paraphrase: the meeting will begin sooner than planned.
- Antonym trap: reportée would mean moved later.
The repeated-word trap
A distractor can reuse a word from the passage while changing the relationship between ideas. Before reading the options, express the relevant sentence in simpler French or English. Then choose the option that preserves the relationship, even if its vocabulary is different.
A four-step practice method
Locate the evidence, name the relationship, paraphrase it and explain why the nearest distractor fails. Repeating this process builds a network of meanings instead of a list of isolated translations.
- Locate: Which sentence decides the answer?
- Classify: Is it cause, contrast, purpose, restriction or attitude?
- Paraphrase: Say it another way.
- Reject: What exact detail makes the distractor wrong?
Five paraphrase patterns in TCF reading questions
Contextual synonym questions are not always phrased as vocabulary questions. A passage may state a cause while the answer gives its consequence, replace a formal verb with an everyday expression, or express the same limitation through an antonym and negation. The task is to preserve the full proposition, including who did what, when and with what degree of certainty.
- Lexical synonym: obtenir becomes recevoir in the same situation.
- Definition: un dispositif becomes a system or arrangement described by its function.
- Cause/consequence: transport was interrupted, so the person arrived late.
- Antonym plus negation: ce n’est pas facultatif means it is required.
- Tone to attitude: hesitant phrasing becomes uncertainty in the answer.
A short contextual synonym exercise
Read: « Malgré un accueil enthousiaste, la mesure n’a suscité qu’une adhésion limitée. » A correct paraphrase is that the measure received less support than the positive reception suggested. The words enthousiaste and support are not enough by themselves; malgré and limitée control the relationship.
